We have a 4-question readiness diagnostic in the discovery call. The honest answer for most £1-5m UK SMEs is 'not yet, here are the three things to sort first'. We have walked away from engagements where the timing or the metrics weren't right. We don't take fees for raises that aren't going to land.
What kind of capital do you raise — equity, debt, grants?
All three, judged by which is right for your stage and trajectory. SMEs with steady cash flow but a growth gap are usually better served by working-capital debt or asset finance, not equity dilution. We arrange the introduction or run the process, depending on scope.
How long does a typical raise take?
For SMEs: working-capital debt — 6 to 10 weeks. Equity raise (£250k-£3m, EIS/SEIS-eligible) — 4 to 7 months from kick-off to signed term sheet. Grant-funded innovation projects (Innovate UK, Horizon Europe equivalents) — typically 4 to 12 weeks from notice of opportunity.
Do you take success-fee-only mandates?
For working-capital debt and grant capture, yes, with a small retainer to cover the readiness work. For equity raises we work on a small monthly retainer plus a Lehman-formula success fee, because equity rounds require sustained workstream commitment from us regardless of who closes first.
