Overview

African Drumming Workshops

Sound Africa brings hands-on African drumming to schools, community venues, care settings, workplace away days and cultural events in Kent and across the UK. Tobi Akiode leads call-and-response activities and shared rhythms, with drums and percussion for the agreed group. No previous drumming experience is needed. We discuss pace, sound levels, venue and practical participation needs before delivery.

African drumming workshops for early years and childminders, schools and education, community and youth groups, care and supported wellbeing, workplace teams, festivals and private events. Tobi Akiode leads every session.

Primary outcome

A shared rhythm experience that brings mixed groups into active participation, listening and momentum.

Best fit

This is a strong fit when

Schools & Education: Childminders, nurseries, schools, colleges and alternative provision, including SEND.

Community, Charity & Youth Groups: Community groups, charities, churches, youth clubs and holiday programmes.

Care & Supported Wellbeing: Care homes, supported living, day centres and wellbeing organisations.

Corporate & Workplace Teams: Team-building for staff away days, conferences and workplace events.

Not the right fit

Pause before booking when

Events seeking tokenistic cultural entertainment without respect for the workshop's musical and cultural context.

Venues that cannot provide suitable access, setup information or a safe environment for the agreed participants.

Bookings where safeguarding responsibilities or material participant needs are withheld from planning.

See the workshop unfold

Watch Sound Africa build shared rhythm across different settings.

Explore Sound Africa workshops for different groups: a session for young carers at Wye School; an SEN workshop, including PMLD, at St Nicholas School in Canterbury; and corporate team-building with LawnsOne. Sound Africa has also delivered workshops organised by ShivaNova at Equator Festival and World in a Tent, as well as fortnightly community African drumming workshops in Charing and Woodchurch, Ashford. Tobi Akiode leads the drumming for Sound Africa.

The films show call-and-response and shared rhythm in practice. Each workshop is planned around the group and its access needs.
