A repeatable smartphone product-photography process starts by controlling the environment before changing camera settings. The objective is consistent, truthful product representation that can be reproduced across products and shooting sessions.
Prepare the capture area #
- Use a clean lightbox or controlled lighting area.
- Use a smooth sweep rather than allowing a hard backdrop corner or crease to create a visible band behind the product.
- Clean the product and backdrop before the first test shot.
- Stabilise the phone or camera so framing can be repeated.
- Mark or record product and camera positions when consistency matters across a range.
Start with controlled camera settings #
Use the lowest practical ISO, a white balance that produces a neutral and repeatable result under the actual lights, and a shutter speed that gives a properly exposed sharp image. The exact shutter speed is not universal: available light, device, stability and product movement determine what works. Keep focus on the product and review sharpness at full size rather than judging only from the phone preview.
Approve a test shot before production #
- Background is clean and does not introduce an unwanted colour cast.
- Product colour and texture are believable.
- Edges and important details are sharp.
- Highlights are not clipped and dark areas retain useful detail.
- Product scale and framing match the intended position standard.
- No stand, hand, dust, crease or unintended reflection distracts from the product.
Capture master versus final crop #
Capture with enough resolution and framing tolerance to support the required final output. A square final image does not always require square capture; preserving a larger master can give safer cropping options. Do not crop so tightly that the product loses breathing room or channel requirements are compromised.
Keep a shoot record #
Record the device, light arrangement, relevant settings, product position and any approved exception. This turns a successful result into a repeatable standard rather than a lucky photograph.
