Overview

What this programme covers

Start with purpose and audience, then shape messages, listening and confirmation around the action the workplace actually needs.

Workplace communication fails in ordinary moments: an email leaves the decision unclear, a briefing carries too much detail, feedback avoids the behaviour that needs attention or two colleagues leave the same conversation with different next steps. This programme helps professionals make those moments more deliberate. Participants learn to define the purpose of a message, adapt it to the audience and channel, listen for meaning and uncertainty, and structure a concise response that makes action visible. Applied exercises cover written updates, briefings, questions, listening and feedback using realistic workplace situations. Each participant leaves with a communication toolkit and personal improvement plan built around the situations they handle most often. The programme develops practical habits and reflective judgement; it is not therapy, mediation, a clinical intervention or a guarantee that every difficult conversation will be resolved.

Evidence standard

Evidence and learning boundaries

Learning is evidenced through the clarity of revised messages, observable listening and feedback behaviours during practice, and the quality of each participant’s communication toolkit and improvement plan. Attendance alone is not evidence of workplace adoption, and the programme does not guarantee agreement, conflict resolution or a particular performance result.

Learning outcomes

What participants will learn

Participants should be able to plan, deliver and check communication across written, spoken and feedback situations.

Define the decision, understanding or action a message must create before choosing its content, channel and level of detail.

Adapt language, structure and evidence to the audience without becoming vague, patronising or unnecessarily technical.

Use attentive listening and purposeful questions to test meaning, surface uncertainty and reduce avoidable assumptions.

Deliver concise briefings, written updates and behaviour-based feedback with a clear request, owner and next step.

Build a personal communication improvement plan using observable habits, feedback and proportionate follow-through checks.

Programme structure

Programme modules

Four applied stages cover communication purpose, audience adaptation, listening and a reusable clarity-and-action toolkit.

Start with purpose and action

Participants diagnose why a familiar workplace message created delay or rework. They identify the decision, understanding or action the communication should have produced, distinguish essential information from background detail and choose a proportionate channel. The exercise provides a practical test for whether a message is ready to send or deliver.

Shape the message for the audience

The cohort restructures briefings and written updates around the audience’s context, questions and evidence needs. Participants practise leading with the point, organising supporting detail and making requests explicit while retaining necessary nuance. They also examine how jargon, unexplained assumptions and excessive context make apparently complete messages difficult to use.

Listen, question and clarify

Participants practise listening for both content and uncertainty, then use concise questions, paraphrasing and confirmation to test what they have understood. Scenarios show how interruption, premature solutions and untested inference can distort a conversation. The module closes with a method for recording what was agreed without turning every exchange into unnecessary bureaucracy.

Give feedback and close the loop

The final module focuses on factual, respectful feedback and action confirmation. Participants describe the situation and observed behaviour, explain relevant impact, invite a response and agree an appropriate next step. They then build a personal improvement plan with one or two observable communication habits and a realistic source of feedback.

Audience

Who this is for

Suitable for people communicating across teams and functions who can practise realistic workplace messages and receive feedback.

Professionals who write updates, deliver briefings or coordinate work across teams and functions.

Managers and team leaders who need to set expectations, give feedback and confirm action clearly.

Client-facing colleagues adapting technical, commercial or operational information for different audiences.

Teams prepared to practise with realistic, appropriately anonymised workplace communication situations.

Fit check

Pause before booking when

Anyone seeking speech therapy, counselling, clinical support or a substitute for formal workplace mediation.

Organisations expecting one session to resolve structural conflict, unsafe behaviour or unclear decision rights without wider action.

Participants seeking presentation design software training or a public-speaking performance course rather than everyday workplace communication practice.

Delivery and pricing

Choose the route that fits the cohort

The selected format should support role-relevant practice, accessibility needs and safe handling of workplace examples.

Delivery

Private online workshop

A remote communication studio uses role-relevant messages, listening exercises and feedback practice for one organisational group. The joining design confirms accessibility and which workplace situations can be discussed without exposing restricted material.

Delivery

On-site team workshop

A workplace-based session gives participants room for paired and small-group rehearsal around realistic cross-functional exchanges. Venue arrangements, attendance and confidentiality expectations are established for the selected communication scenarios.

Delivery

Role-relevant scenario preparation

Before delivery, the sponsor identifies the roles attending and the communication situations that create the most friction or rework. Examples can be anonymised, and participants should not bring personal, restricted or investigation-sensitive material into general skills practice.

Delivery

Improvement-plan review

An optional improvement-plan conversation can examine practised habits, feedback received and adjustments the participant still intends to test. It supports reflection without becoming performance management, dispute resolution or clinical assessment.

Founder-led delivery

Tobi Akiode

Founder-led facilitation focused on purposeful communication, observable practice and clear workplace action.

Tobi Akiode personally leads Effective Communication Skills for the Workplace and keeps the work grounded in the communication demands participants face across roles and functions. Examples connect clarity with operational delivery, stakeholder decisions and appropriate use of evidence, while participants remain responsible for their organisation’s policies, relationships and any action beyond the training session.

Communication discovery identifies the workplace situations, cohort relationships and practice boundaries appropriate for this programme. Tobi Akiode guides skills development without turning the workshop into counselling, mediation, investigation or an assessment of any participant’s health or employment case.

Questions

What buyers usually ask before booking

Confirm the practical focus, communication situations covered, participant preparation, delivery format and programme boundaries.

What communication situations does the programme cover?

Applied work can include written updates, briefings, requests, listening, clarification, action confirmation and behaviour-based feedback. The precise examples depend on the cohort and agreed scope. This is an everyday workplace communication programme, not specialist speech therapy, counselling, mediation or a public-speaking performance course. Participants then check whether the recipient can identify the required action, owner and timing without further interpretation.

Is the programme suitable for mixed roles and levels?

It can work well across roles when participants share enough workplace context to practise together safely. The discovery conversation checks seniority, reporting relationships, accessibility and the situations the sponsor wants addressed. If power dynamics or active disputes would make shared practice inappropriate, the cohort or scope should be changed before delivery.

Will participants practise giving feedback?

Yes. Participants practise describing a relevant situation and observable behaviour, explaining impact, inviting a response and agreeing a proportionate next step. The exercise develops communication skill; it does not replace the organisation’s performance, grievance, safeguarding or investigation procedures. The practice includes listening for missing context and confirming what each person has understood before the conversation closes.

What will participants take back to work?

Each participant develops a practical communication toolkit and personal improvement plan. These may include purpose and audience checks, message structures, listening prompts, feedback preparation and a method for confirming action. The outputs are working aids created during training, not a guarantee that every communication problem will disappear.

How is communication training delivery scoped and confirmed?

Cohort relationships, communication situations, accessibility, delivery setting, scenario preparation and any improvement-plan conversation determine the programme requirement. The communication-skills commercial record gives the selected date, price, learning inclusions and participant inputs. Sponsors can resolve confidentiality or support questions before confirming attendance. This protects participants before scenarios are prepared.
